June 25, 2011 (Island Cricket): Sri Lanka’s sports ministry is set to intervene and name new administrators at Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), after the richest sporting body on the island sought a government bailout of $18.35 million and other loans to save the financially struggling SLC from total collapse.

The government’s sports ministry, who appointed the existing interim committee and the current administrators at SLC, say that they hope to make changes “as soon as the national team returns from England,” according to the ministry’s spokesperson Harsha Abeykoon.

In recent years, SLC has been functioning under a non-elected interim committee appointed by government ministers, who have chosen officials without a transparent assessment of their qualifications. The current administration at SLC has been accused by the local media of gross financial mismanagement, nepotism and fraud.

However, the ministry has not said that it will allow a democratic process to take its course – something that the International Cricket Council (ICC) hopes to make a requirement of all member boards, in a proposed amendment to its constitution.

Upon his appointment in 2008 as chairman of SLC, Arjuna Ranatunga revealed that the cricket board was surviving on a $ 7.5 million overdraft. But several international tours after the announcement, SLC generated sufficient income to bring their accounts to a good standing.

The current administration, under chairman Somachandra de Silva and secretary Nishantha Ranatunga, have left SLC in dire straits, with debts amounting to $69 million as a result of budget-overruns during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

Is it all talk and no action? I only hope, Sanath is not brought in any capcity as he like DS has no Admin experience.I plead with the powers to stay clear of politics as all countries other than Pakistan and Sri Lanka have done. India is only partially political
.It is due to politics that Moody withdrew his candidacy from Coach. The whole world knows all the malparcrices of SLC and obviously will judge the government in the same ligh. Appouint people not on cricket ability alone and most have no education or admin experience.Or else Cricket will die a natural death. I know many who have washed their hands off cricket and will not even watch on TV.

This is like Col. Gaddafi promising reforms. You are asking the people who are causing the problems year after year to find replacements.
