Ajantha Mendis faked injury, report says

By Ryan Francis

September 10, 2011 (Island Cricket): Sri Lanka's mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis opted out of the second Test match at Pallekele after faking his injury, according to a report on a Sri Lankan newspaper.

Mendis was in line for selection when Rangana Herath was ruled out due to a finger injury.

"The cricket hierarchy suspected Mendis of faking the injury ..." a report on The Island newspaper stated.

"Mendis was named in the playing eleven on the eve of the second Test, but had complained of back pain to a senior member of the Sri Lankan side on the morning of the Test Match," the report added.

To the amazement of many, selectors omitted the mystery spinner for the opening Test match of the three-match series at Galle, on a surface that would have greatly assisted him, and instead picked him to play on a flat-track at Pallekele.

Due to inconsistent selection policies that do not provide the 26-year-old with a regular place in the side, Mendis finds himself constantly being forced to justify his selection when he is picked to play.

"Mendis is in Colombo to do a scan in order to ascertain the exact condition of the back problem," his manager Roshan Abeysinghe told Island Cricket today.

"Once the scan is done, the reports will be shown to the team management to ascertain the situation even further."

Ajantha Mendis wouldn't do that. Instead of making weird investigations, the selectors should learn to include him in the team regularly.

Poor selection is one of the main reason for our team's failure. We miss De Silva's committee.

Love cricket's picture

He is constantly being looked over pushed around. Pretty sad!

i dont think sri lanka has ever had a desent selectin committee they all suck......they have there own agenders and what not .....im not that much of a fan of mendis but not playing him on a pitch like the galle wicket was the bigest joke of the centurey...

I don't mind even if he is doing that..you know Galle was the best strip to use him..but what the selectors did there and same thing happens to Dammika Prasad instead of using crossed seam bowlers like Suranga Lakmal and Shamintha he would have been the best option in England..he was not in the squad for that tour but he's here on the bench..if reports says that Welagedara is injured why he is named in the final 11...Dilhara is at home Dammika on the bench...

It seems just weird that mendis would work so hard to get back into the 11 then throw it all away by faking an injury; it seems more likely that he was blackmail/coerced into complaining of a backache to get off the team.
