'We want to thank Kepler Wessels' - Dilshan

By Rex Clementine | December 30, 2011

Tillakaratne DilshanSri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan paid a mock tribute to former South African captain Kepler Wessels yesterday, thanking him for the team’s first ever win on South African soil.

The Sri Lankans stunned their hosts yesterday in Durban, when they won the second Test by 208 runs inside four days to square the three-match series 1-1.

Wessels had told Cape Times, a South African newspaper, that the country’s A team would beat the Sri Lankans, who were not a strong team and it was Dilshan’s chance to hit back.

"We actually want to thank Kepler Wessels. He gave us the motivation. We are very, very thankful to Mr. Wessels," Dilshan told journalists yesterday.

"I would like to thank him very much. We have proved that we are good. We said if we played the Sri Lankan brand of cricket, we can beat anyone. We came, we played our brand of cricket and we beat one of world’s best teams."

Dilshan was overjoyed to end all the criticism on his captaincy, after he had gone through ten games without tasting victory.

"It’s a great feeling and I have waited for this for six months. We are going to celebrate this," he said.

When asked what would be his celebrations, the Sri Lankan captain said: "Let’s see. We need to go back to the hotel and we are going to enjoy the whole night."

we won just one match and there is a one more match to go. even in the second match we could have lost the opportunity to win because of Amla's batting. If Amla didnt do that mistake he could have built a partnership with AB and bat till the fifth day, so it is better if we stop boasting. there s a long way to go and get ready for that.

Also dnt talk abt kepler wessels more. He has the right to have his own opinion. we can just prove him wrong.

A bit too early for the jibes I think. If we win the whole series by all means then go ahead Dilshan, but otherwise stay silent as if we lose , we will just be dismissed as lucky in the second test. Time to build and work hard, not get too complacent.

I agree completely with Sakala Bujang. Sure it was a good win, but it really is too early to be insulting the opposing team. Leave it for the end of the series when/if Sri Lanka does win. He should be decent and humble in his win like Sanga and Mahela, only then will he be respected as not only a good captian, but a person too.

I read here the most funniest comment i ve ever seen..."if Amla not did the mistake he could have bat till 5th day" hey big fool...any one can bat whole five days if he's not got out..buffalo...

i think Kepler deserved this. He just dint say their A team could beat us. He also said he wants SL to be competitive and & atleast take game to day 4 or 5 and compared us to bangladesh..

good one Dilshan. this is what we shud do to shut the mouths of SA commentators. they think their team is a wonder team but unfortunately they dont. they havent won a series in SA after 2008. we can understand Dilshan's joy as he was under tremendous pressure. well played boys. keep up the good work.

Yeah, any one could bat the whole match, if he don't make any mistake....

I didn't see Dilshan insults SA team... Did he? He just replied to Wessels.... And why shall not... I'm sure those comments really motivated our players, especially after the 1st test saying that at least we should try to play till 4th or 5th day.

I'm sure, even Sanga or Mahela would've replied to Wessels and I've already seen Sanga & Mahela responded in the media, on Wessels comments.

Our Lions 1st replied by deed....then why not with a word???
