Jayawardene sold for $1.4 million, Perera fetches $650,000 in IPL auction

By Staff Writers | February 4, 2012

Mahela JayawardenaSri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene has been sold to Delhi Daredevils for $1.4 million dollars in the IPL auction held in India today, while Muttiah Muralitharan was sold to the Royal Challengers Bangalore for $220,000.

Interest for Muralitharan was shown by the Rajasthan Royals who bid $10,000 above Muralitharan's reserve price of $200,000, only to be outbid by Bangalore. The now-defunct Kochi Tuskers purchased Muralitharan for $1.1 million last year.

Jayawardene sparked a bidding frenzy that saw him go from a reserve price of $300,000 to $1.4 million, with Daredevils and Deccan Chargers both showing keen interest in him. Jayawardene was purchased by the Tuskers for $1.5 million last year.

The Chargers and the Mumbai Indians took all-rounder Thisara Perera from a starting bid of $50,000 to over $500,000. Perera was purchased by Mumbai for $650,000.

Dinesh Chandimal surprisingly received only one bid and was sold to Rajasthan Royals for his base price of $50,000.

With a reserve price of $50,000, Upul Tharanga, Rangana Herath, Farveez Maharoof and Ajantha Mendis failed to attract any bids.

We have a joke in India, we say that when a player gets to play for Delhi Daredevils, his career gets over Ha ha!

Wish to see Mahela score well in the coming CB series rather than this thing called IPL.

Mumbai and RCB look strong this time too. CSK, expected to perform well as usual.

Mahela and Sanga in not so good teams. Good that I'll get to see Murali in Bangalore.
