Kandamby should be in Sri Lanka ODI squad – Jayasuriya

By Staff Writers | August 2, 2012

Sanath Jayasuriya wants Thilina Kandamby back in the ODI squad. In a recent interview, Sri Lankan batting legend Sanath Jayasuriya said that Thilina Kandamby should be included in Sri Lanka's ODI squad.

He said he was "very disappointed with the selectors" for the repeated selection of Chamara Kapugedera who, according to Jayasuriya, has "not proved himself".

Jayasuriya was responding to a question on how Sri Lanka will manage when the likes of Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene retire in an interview with Wisden India, when he said that he disagreed with the current selection policy.

"I don't agree with certain selection decisions. I feel a person like Thilina Kandamby should be in this ODI squad," Jayasuriya said.

"I am not against any player. But someone like [Chamara] Kapugedera has been given many chances [and] he has not proved himself, yet he keeps getting chances.

"From that point of view, I am very disappointed with the selectors. There are players who have been performing and they are not being given a chance.

"The selectors have to be responsible, they should pick the right players."

Kandamby was last seen wearing Sri Lankan ODI colours in 2011, when he was surprisingly selected as vice-captain from oblivion for Sri Lanka's tour to England.

The 30-year-old was dropped mid-series after struggling to cope with English conditions and later axed from the squad entirely.

Kandamby, who made his ODI debut in 2004, has played 38 one-dayers for Sri Lanka and has scored five half-centuries at an average of 30.

At this year's premier limited overs tournament, the left-hander averaged 42.40 in six matches and made three half-centuries for the Sinhalese Sports Club.

Nope! Sanath's got dis one WRONG. we already have tharanga, sanga, thirimanne with STRIKERATES in mid-70s. Can't afford 2 have another one. SL have enough stabilizers in da middle order. Wud rather have JEEWAN MENDIS(can hit bigshots off fastbowlers and can pinch singles)

allready thranga do great gob in first 20 overs.sanga and kandambi can carry that good work till end of the inning 50,55 SR more than enough for Sl team because we have best balling attack in the world.

I think it shows the pathetic selection tug of war. So people like Kandamby would have been a good selection few years ago, but Selectors ignored him. And once selection committee and captain changed in recent past, Suddenly Kandamby appeared as vice captain of the team, which was an astonishing assignment(may be the first time in world cricket history). Certain captains have favorites, so they want people those guys in the squad. Though Kapu been a failure he is getting his cap every possible opportunity. So it says how these things happen. People are playing with their responsibilities and also playing with the future of Sri Lankan cricket. Now it smells bad about Thirimanne's future. Most probably he will be discarded due to the poor performance at No7 in ODIs. People like Dimuth, Roshen, do not get fair chances even though they prove themselves in domestic and A team assignments. But Kapu gets it without any difficulty. So I think it really matters which camp you sit in the tug of war and which camp has the super power of selection.

It's so disheartening depressing disconcerting to say the least about the sorry state of our Team..I think we have gone back to our GOOD OLD DAYS of being the Whipping Boys ..Pre 1994...But I like to say my 5 cents worth..and try to be Constructive ..

There are few things need to be corrected..I keep hearing about Political Influence and Nepotism.

.Chamara Silva, Jehan Mubarak & Chamara Kapugedara's inclusions in the side is question only best answered by our Selectors!!

. Our Bowling attack isn't POTENT enough to cut sway in to opponents. Before anyone start throwing BRICK BAT at me...it is NOT BECAUSE WE DON"T HAVE THE PLAYERS!! It's because we don't select the Players who could do the Job for us!!( We have only lost Murali since world cup)to compound the problems we have kept loosing key bowlers to injuries which didn't help.... BUT we still have the Bowlers who are good enough to be selected...but for some reason..again ONLY SELECTORS CAN ANSWER THIS...they keep picking the same old ..even failure after failures? Why?

. The Hierarchy of Srilankan Cricket should take our assisting coaches to task!! Why? Our Batting has been Atrocious our Bowling lacks discipline and our fielding has gone down. I like to know what is Marvan Attapattu and Champaka Ramanayke doing? How can we let KOZHI score century after century against us? Let me tell you IT MAKES MY BLOOD BOIL..seeing someone taking our Bowling to cleaners!! (Like we used to do to INDIA OFTEN!!!)Are we going to let this continue? Are we going to sit and watch this as a PROUD NATION!! Do we have a plan? If Plan A doesn't work do we have a Plan B? Surely not? You can't blame Mahela..because he doesn't HAVE THE CATTLE!! With all due respect to Marvan, I don't think he is good enough to continue as a batting coach. We have ROY DIAS, CHANDIKA HATHURASINGHE who can do a MUCH BETTER JOB for us (You just need to ask!!!)Well for bowling...I think its time to move on from Chamapaka because obviously he hasn't done much with our attack lately. There are other candidates who is capable of assisting our Bowlers like Rumesh Ratnayake, Waqar Younis or even Chaminda Vaas? Well since we have Graham Ford, why not get a South African as a fielding coach? Remember Jonty Rhodes???

. Are we not going to arrest this problem by addressing this issue or continue with the Blame game? I think it is very Prudent for all Players, Coaches, Management to sit down and revisit what went wrong against INDIA after this series..and what we need to do? and how can we do better? and who are special personnel need to be hired to stop the rot moving forward!!!!

. Well we have 3 months to do something before we land in OZZIE Land where you will be Physically and mentally found wanting!!

. Whoever with the powers at SLCB reading this article...DO SOMETHING!! FOR HEAVEN SAKE!!

But someone has to start the bowl rolling!! Is anyone there at SLCB reading this!!!

well said Byron Raj !! it sucks when we lose but it is even more atrocious when we lose to the indians.

With a ordinary average of 30.00 with strike rate less than 70 in ODI 's he shouldn't be in the team.. btw his age is 30.. so how long is he gonna play with his big belly ? also he is a poor feilder.. better try youngsters , so atleast we they can play for the country for some time.. amoung under 19 players Niroshan Dickwella, Sadun weerakkody, Sanitha De Mel are promising players...

Byron Raj , u show a commendable knowledge and often others too.Sanath may have a reason to include Kandamby as he shows potential. I too felt same but his fielding is poor. There may be a reason for selectors to feel Kapu shud come in. SLC has spent a lot on Kapu and Chamara Silva and simply cannot discard them. But Kapu i feel may not get a nother chance. These 3 along with Mahroof, Mubarak get chances only low down the order. Those who were low down the order like Dilshan, Chandimal improved when sent high up. Mubarak in tests got too mmuch of a chance . Now both Mubarak and Chamara into their 30's shud hhave matured and be better like it has happened to Simon Katich, Hayde and Lehmann.
Certaily the selectors are much better than those 15 yrs ago though there were skeletons in the cupboard for Ashantha, Duleep, Aravinda and LalithK.
