Afghanistan knock five-time champs Sri Lanka out of Asia Cup

Riding on brilliant performances from the spinners, Afghanistan registered a comfortable 91-run win against Sri Lanka in their first Asia Cup encounter at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Monday. Chasing a tricky target of 250, the Sri Lankan team got bundled out for 158 in 41.1 overs.

Well done AFGANS, as we new this result long before the Asian cup, i posted a comment but unfortunately it was no posted in this column. as i said after the Loss against Bangladesh that man Kusal Mendis is a useless batsman not a reliable batsman and also srilankan cricket and team are politicized. what is Hathurusingha, Thilan (haraum lakse), Labroy, Gurusingha, Mathews, fielding coach and the selectors to say. must be very happy because they played for the Asia Cup. no matter they were out of the competition they just want to say hey are on the right track. yes you are in the right track to get thrashed out of world cup also from the preliminary round. now Hathurusingha, Thilan and Guruingha can fly back to Australia to take some time off as they have done a YEOMAN service to srilankan cricket. they can rest as much as they can and come back just before the next outing. this is why the former cricketers requested the changes to the system, unfortunately bloody politicians indirectly handling the management to satisfy their party politician. very soon all the other unrecognized cricketing nations will also beat school boy type srilankan cricket very more srilankan cricket they have dug their own grave because of the politics in the cricket and politicians who are opposing for the change of the system recommended by the former cricketers.

No surprise with the result here going down to Afgan's as well nailing the final nails to the coffin.!!!!
Impending doom was well predicted in this blog, due to this kind of dumb decision making Nepotists. The futility of Kusal Mendis was pointed out in my previous post. Besides putting him again in the playing XI, Sending him as Opener again in a crucial gamr...?

This absurdity & simple logic is something even a donkey would understand.

Way to go Hathurusinghe/Mathews....Neext series onward, Get the other favorite Chandimal back to OPEN with so ever great Kusal Mendis for all forthcoming matches up to the WC..LoL

Exactly as already AXED the read-hearings in their eyes; Dickwella & Asela Gunarathne, now AXE Upul Tharanga too..!!!! So you can bring in the remaining favorites like Dimuth Karunarathne as did in last WC.,

Disrupting the pair who has the best record as Openers for SL since 2017 and paved the way to put up two consecutive 50+ stands for the 1st wkt to build 300+ winning totals Vs SA in last 2 odis....

to slot in one of the 2 WORST FAILURES in limited over cricket, (Chandimal, Mendis)to Open both crucial matches in Asia Cup, BENCHING 2nd best Run maker in 2017 Niroshan Dickwella (only behind Tharanga)... the superb logic of coach Hathuru & skipper Mathews made sure the inevitable preliminary round EXIT from Asia for SL!

All pals of Sumathipala such as Ashely de Silva, Charith Senanayake, Asanka Gurusinghe, Graham Labrooy, and even Chandika Hathurusinghe should be shown the door now. Best time to purge SLC of all past evils.

captain Angelo Mathews..

"Even in the first game, we got all out for 150-odd. Congratulations to Afghanistan, they outplayed us. We got a good start but once again lost our way in the middle overs. The bowlers did well, the fielding had also improved from the last match. It's just the batting unit that let us down. We played better cricket in the latter part of the South Africa series. Just disappointing to see the way the boys went about it. We just couldn't handle pressure. Not passing 150 on both occasions is very shocking and disappointing."

Over to you Mathews.....

How about the TWO ZERO Starts to begin TWO VITAL ODI innings CONSECUTIVELY, with ONE OPENER already RETURNED back to the hut in FIRST OVER ITSELF?

What is the roll of KUSAL MENDIS in the playing XI in those 2 Odis & his past Odi appearances since 2017 going at 18 batting average?

Isn't the BENCHED BOY Dikka was the third best Run scorer in previous series?

Didn't Dickwella scored 826 runs at 33 Av going at blistering 96 STRIKE RATE becoming the 2nd best SL Batter behind Tharanga (Opener who scored 1,000+ runs at 50 av - 48 Av - 92 SR)?

Isn't it the most logical thing to do is, to give the most productive pair of Openers (& individual run Making as well) the maximum possible chances together up to WC, as Openers to make the maximum use of them in WC?

There are too many more QUESTIONS to be asked apart from the above from Mathews & million dollar Coach Hathuru.

The Opening pair Tharanga & Dickwella had produced 599 runs for the 1st Wicket @ 40 Average, maintaining an EXCEPTIONAL RUN RATE 6.33 in their 15 Odi inings together as Openers during the period since Jan 2017 to date. Another point to be noted is all those 599 runs in their 15 innings together were scored against Top Class Quality Opponents as follows:

- 10 inngs Vs SA
- 4 innings Vs PK
- 1 Ing Vs India

The Best Performed Individual Openers - Overall Av, SR maintained over higher number of innings (batting @ No: 1, 2 ) in past 20 months, since Jan 2017

The Best Performed Individual Openers - Overall Av, SR maintained over higher number of innings (batting @ No: 1, 2 ) in past 20 months, since Jan 2017

Dear SLC admins, Hathuru and Mathews,

There have been many sad days in SL cricket in the past few years. My sheer belief that we will bounce back soon gave me glimpse of hope. But today was the day that sealed the deal. Truely dissapointed for our team. I can see the skills and potential in Kusal Mendis. But what good he is to the team, if he cannot deliver in the biggest stage of the game? This tournament would have been at least competitve if you selected the players based on their current form. Giving a free pass doesn't help the players mind set either. You are taking away Mendis's competitiveness to fight for a place in the team while destroying whatever the confidence that's left in him by making him open the innings. We desperately required a healthy partnership in the first 10 overs. That didn't happen. Players forgot to rotate the strike and keep the score board ticking, ultimately trying foolishly to catch up. In ODI's, building an innings is not blocking and playing defensively every ball. It's about scoring without taking any risks to protect your wicket. We have never learnt from our mistakes in the past. Feilding errors are still there and very fresh. So what's next? I see there was a massive effort to steal SLC money from a tournament that hasn't even begun yet. I'm sure you all will give us a nice excuse and I'll forget about it in the coming days just beause the looting in big chairs is the new norm of the country. I made my peace with it because there's nothing much I could do. But the game of cricket runs through every Sri Lankans blood and vains. That's how I cope with unruly, uneducated bunch of theives (no matter from which party they are) running our country. So please save the game of cricket. Because that will be all that is left going forward.

A sad, but diehard SL Cricket fan.

As Matthews mentioned in his speech, it was a shocking performance.

The truth is that the whole team failed. The whole team. We can't blame just one player. The unfortunate fact is that none of the players showed any intent to do better. There was no spirit within the whole unit.

They have let their country down as they have for the past 3 years.

The unfortunate fact is that the team would still be paid their millions no matter what. So the question now is, is it worth paying all this money to a contiuningly failing team. My answer is no. This bunch doesn't deserve the big money they are paid. That includes the players, the administration and support staff. All of them.

I think the people should now petetionbthe government to reduce the money flow to SLC and allocate that money for a better cause.

MDKJulius/Fight4wrong/etc- Now don't blame Chandimal/Dhanushka and others, we have a specialised batsmen and dashing opener called Upul de Bradman who is 34 years old and can't bowl nor field and played more than 230 ODI over the last 10-15 years but still average 34 and SR 75. This year Upul has played 12 ODIs with a world class average of 27 and mighty SR of 75. scoring 100s is nothing for him so he scored non this year.
