Mathews can overtake Tendulkar, feels Sri Lanka's outgoing team manager

Sri Lanka cricket teams outgoing manager has made the bold statement that the current captain of the national team — Angelo Mathews — can surpass Sachin Tendulkar in number of Test centuries in his career, going by the fine form Mathews has struck over the recent couple of years.

Wild statements all around I am afraid. Serously no one in their right mind will make a comment to the effect of someone even getting close to Sachin.

Stormy - this goes to show you the level (or lack of it in this case) of knowledge and understanding of the game that our cricket administrators have!!! To call this a wild statement is being too polite :) ..

RE: Mathews having the 2nd best test average as captain:

Think de Zoyza is meaning this:
http://www.cricketcountry.com/news/angel...

Mathews DOES have 2nd best Test average after Bradman AS CAPTAIN

Did CricketCountry forget abt their own article? :D)

Mathews IS pretty ahead when compared to SL greats, yes?

I can't remember Sanga or Mahela having a test average of 50+ by the time they were 27/28? I could be wrong tho...

It's a big call. Whilst I personally think it's unlikely, anything is possible in sport.

One factor that won't help Angelo is the amount of Test matches Sri Lanka plays, including the the number of Tests per series some nations offer Sri Lanka.

As India have become more powerful and financially lucrative, bigger nations often wanted 4 or 5 Tests against them.
SL struggle to receive and/or host a 3 test series against some opposition.

Angelo has been in terrific touch as a Test batsmen, in a real purple patch, but that won't last forever as his career progresses. There will be both ups and downs like all players.
At the moment he is looking batting sensibly in Tests, which will be more important now with Mahela gone, and Sanga on the way out.

Kumar Sangakkara retired from one-day cricket at the end of the 2015 World Cup and is set to sign-off from Tests during the series against India in August. Suggesting that he continue, de Zoysa said, "it would be a tragedy for him to stop now."

"He can probably surpass (Sachin) Tendulkar's number of Test centuries if he keeps going," he said. "He is already no. 2 to (Don) Bradman and he will probably retain that position in batting average terms. There is so much more he can offer for Sri Lanka."

i think he was telling about sanga, not mathews.

Yes, looks like the article misquoted him. He was clearly talking about Sangakkara. I was shocked to think that someone who managed the national team could be so ignorant. Good to know this is a misquote :)

CricketCountry is really garbage. Articles are very low quality and a lot of mistakes. Owned by an Indians.

Thanks to those that have clarified that the article has probably misquoted him. As Uppercut's link has shown 2nd behind Bradman as Test captain only.

Sangakkara makes more sense but even he is unlikely to beat Sachin, becuase of time in terms of matches left that he will probably play.
At this stage Sachin has played 70 more tests than him for 13 more test tons, and over 3700 more runs.
I couldn't see Sanga hanging around till 40 odd to try beat this, and even if he did I still think SL wouldn't play enough tests in this period for him to get there.
