Nobody is playing 'textbook cricket' anymore – Samaraweera

"At the moment you have to be a bit more aggressive mentally. No one is playing textbook style cricket (anymore). I’m not saying about hitting every ball, but you have to choose the right ball to hit," said Samaraweera. Samaraweera reckoned the influence of T20 has changed the approach to batting...

These silly excuses are only good for text-books, not for people who watch cricket. Coaching Staff/adm dumb Acts: 1) while two and half days left, why SL declared at 5 wickets in final test when Dikka/Roshen (full-time batsmen) at crease? Any idiot knows Dikka, all-format player should have batted more to get the best experience out of test #2 facing top SA bowlers. SL could have even gathered another 150 runs and worst case would be a draw and but still a series win. 2) Why faded Angi is in short-format team? Is this because of Sanga-political buddy? If based on past-glory, then get SJ back in batting line (LOL). 3) Why sent current top batsman, Dikka after Angi in test #2.? 4) Dana de Silva, alrounder, clearly exhibited recovered form that good enough to be in ODI. But ignored to leave space for dead-wood Angi. 5) Reasonable for immediate suspension for brutal physical fight, theft and burglary. But stupid to suspend an all-format opener, Danus, who contributed for good opening partnerships in test just because of some gold-diggers’ rape accusation (LOL). When you think about top officials, isn’t this double standard? Ripple effect of all these stupid acts caused to loose ODI #1. Remedy to win ODI series: Drop the proven failure, Angi and include Dana de Silva. Include Malinga in squad. Open with UT with KJP/Dana/Danus. Send Dikka in middle order until his form is back. Since not convicted for rape charge, rescind Danus suspension as SL can not afford Angi-Sanga petty politics to loose ODI series. Instead giving bogus excuses, strive full effort going untraditional without petty politics to win this ODI series which is reachable.

and we have a text book style batsman operating as the batting coach of the team. Something doesn’t add up.

I can think of Kholi and Williamson who still play text book cricket and probably the two best batters in the world across formats. There are few batters who will make their international team in all three formats and I reckon they are all technically sound players.

Joe Root, Ben Stokes - just putting a few names together of those that play all 3 formats at international level - all are technical players.

The issue as I see it is temperament and shot selection. This is where the Kholis and Williamson just simply are awesome.
