It wasn't a bad plan. It just became too predictable. Rohit knew it and was good enough to punish them.
The odd short ball at the head or throat would have kept him guessing.

Mr. Samaraweera, please get back to basics. The basic principle in ODI cricket is bowling wicket to wicket. Who on earth advocates bowling wide yorkers in a ODI ? Thisara Perera ended getting 3 wickets by bowling straight. So was he disregarding team strategy ? Had the other bowlers adopted the same strategy the Indians would not have feasted on our bowling.

It just goes to show what an incompetent group we have as support staff.

i think Srilanka made the mistake by selecting bat ting first, obviously India being a host and after being beaten very humiliating way, who would expect a pitch which would help for bowlers.
