In terms of winning away from home they won 1 test but should have won series in Caribbean and arguably would have taken series if not for delays in 2nd Test some self inflicted along with weather.

Early next year is the best opportunity to win a Test on Australian soil for along time for a number of reasons..
1st Test venue is Canberra. New venue, no history, no skeletons, no aura like some other grounds.
Australia will still be tough even without Smith, Warner and past turmoils. They still have strong bowling attack (if all fit) but they will be going into this Test after A long Test series with India. As this article points out SL will face Rabada, STeyn, Philander etc before Australia albeit at home

It is upto SLC to get players to Australia early, acclimatise and have adequate preparation. If it was me i'd be requesting a tour game before 1st Test at Gabba (cos next test their, plus one other maybe Sydney and not some 2 day game in the bush). ANd a D/N practice game somewhere before that Test. But that means longer tour which players don't like...but on the flip side they would have time to be tourists and go to clubs instead of day or evening before a game (within reason).

Need batsmen that can handle pace and bounce in tracks and bowlers able to bowl on harder surfaces and mostly larger grounds. Canberra provides a less daunting challenge than some other venues in Australia.

If I was SLC I would have or try arrange A team tour to Australia somewhere in late 2018.

To give yourself best chance overseat need good preparation and acclimatisation. Might get away with coming from behind with lack of this against weaker opposition. You can stimulate foreign conditions to some extent at home but not the same as going over there and adjusting.
