Sri Lanka cricketers to receive pay hike, Malinga not on contract list

Having cut salaries last year, a now-financially stable SLC will return player payments to just above their previous levels. Some national players had had their earnings trimmed by as much as 30%, when SLC moved to a performance-based model of remuneration in 2017. But the board has now announced...

Privileged Mathews, Chandimal, Dimuth (all 3 batters from Colombo's inner circle) and bowlers Herath /Lakmal (luckily no competitors from Colombo circle) were given category A contracts, while SLC's stepchild BATTER hailed from elsewhere(Tharanga)was given only a B contract, despite his equal or more valuable contributions to SL in past year.

What kind of standardization is this? How can anyone justify this double standard, highly bias treatment?

Chandimal in 2017: 20 odis - 400 runs - 23 Av - 61 SR was one of the clear culprits responsible for dooming so many Odis during past year. Yet he got A category purely on Tests.

Mathews was a total failure in Tests during past 2 yrs:
15 Tests - 29 ings - 860 runs@ 29 Av. What had he done in past year to grant Category A ? When was the last time he won a MoM award?

Dimuth K was given Category A purely on his Test performances; topping 1,000 Test runs in 2017 (as Upul Tharanga did in Odis)

But Tharanga's much harder & significantly unique achievement was not recognized in equal terms as usual to reward him fairly. Why?

Upul Tharanga was one of the only 3 odi players in world cricket to make over 1,000 runs in 2017 (25 odis -1,011 runs - 48 Av - 92 SR - 2x100+ / 6 x 50+ his hundreds against SA & Pak & a 95 Vs India). He made those valuable runs for SL single-handedly, while rest in the team, miserably failed even to come close with their bats to salvage SL in many Odis. Upul even created a SL Odi record carrying his bat throughout an inning Vs Pak trying hard to win a match, but there was not a single batter capable of remaining at the end to support him to make those few runs needed to win.! This was the story in 4th Odi in SA, where UT made 119 from 90 balls @ 132 SR Vs SA in Capetown.!

No matter how you look at it, none can deny the fact obvious to anyone. This proves the point I have stressed in my recent blog.

@Cricexp, After your text Andrew just jumped in to Madu River. I hope he didn't sink unlike his favourite player who is good in sinking the whole ship(Our team) with his extraordinary fielding!!

Horns are hard permanent outgrowth, often curved and pointed, found in pairs on the heads of some little-brainy beings such as cattle, sheep, goats etc. But in IC forums we can find a special kind of such beings with their eyes located on their back-ends, causing a totally inverted vision as seen here.

No wonder why they see cloned crocodiles in teacups....and these pitiful beings don't have enough brains to grasp a point or any capability to oppose it with any sensible comment. So pathetic.. and this is all that they could come up with!
HOooooooooooo.....:D

Only thing I don't understand is why the last Category is called Premier.

I expect captains and vice captains whomever they are top be Cat A, the rest follows so no complaints with them getting in highest bracket. Unlucky for Thisara though.

Not sure if there is a weight towards different formats or those that play all 3 formats coming into the next breakdowns.

Andrew any comments on Thissara being Cat C instead of higher or Malinga not there at all or you only obsessed with Tharanga?

@Delan:

I respect your view & you have some valid explanation for the Cat-A selections, although that was the real basis is a dubious matter, since the senior pro Herath is also in that category, considering only his exceptional Test performances in 2017.

Their can't be any different assessments towards two main formats (between Tests & Odis), since the demands are equally tough, although needs different approach.

Yes Thisara is certainly on the rise in 5 odis played in 2018. But, Thisara Perera was the usual failure in his overall bowling/batting performances in entire 2017, as seen below;

2017 Odi Bowling: 14 odis - 11 wkts @ 44 av - 6.5 Econ
2017 Odi Batting: 14 odis - 219 runs @ 18 av - 108 SR

Thisara's uprising in 2018
bowling in 2018: 5 odis - 11 wkts @ 18 av - 4.9 Econ
batting in 2018: 5 odis - 134 runs @ 45 av - 154 SR

So Cat- C for him is fair enough at this stage. If he continues his recent form in entire 2018, certainly he will be promoted to top bracket next year, with all the blessings from SLC.

Don't forget Tharanga's hard work in OdIs single-handedly trying to bring success in numerous occasions for SL, when rest of all batters crumbled like thin wafer. He scored over 1k odi runs for SL @ near 50 av maintaining a near run-a-ball strike rate against all opponents including top nations
(25 odis -1,011 runs - 48 Av - 92 SR - 2x100+ / 6 x 50+). His hundreds came against SA & Pak & a 95 Vs India came in away series.

Don't forget, UT had even created a SL Odi record, carrying his bat throughout an inning Vs Pak trying hard to win a match, but there was not a single batter capable of remaining at the end to support him to make those few runs needed to win.! This was the story in 4th Odi in SA, where UT made 119 from 90 balls @ 132 SR Vs SA in Capetown, chasing 300+.

The next closest scorer in 2017 Odis for SL was Dickwella with 826 runs @ 33 Av from 26 Ods... way behind (almost 200 runs behind) Upul.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not obsessed, but reveling the absolute facts with stats, to criticize against the obvious double-standard treatment happening around, that I can't bare silently.

Still none of those "critics" who accuse me in these forums couldn't prove me wrong, with any factual substance.!

Whether U admit or not Tharanga is the most discriminated bloke in SL cricket, right throughout his career.

The other SL player come closer to it was, truly gifted but grossly underutilized down-south leg-spinner allrounder Upul Chandana (150+ odi wkts). Chandana was given only 16 tests spread over 13yrs & in one of those rare opportunities, he even took 5 wkts in each inning Vs Ponting's strongest Test side in 2004 Darwin, Australia. Chandana prematurely retired with a broken heart after having a tearful press conference in 2007. He was unjustly treated very long limited to a fringe player, just to accommodate Colombo's Dharmasena as 2nd offie in the side, in addition to wizard Murali. Despite excellent performances, pushing in & out for 13 yrs, ultimately became unbearable for him. Probably Chandana holds the world record for having most number of catches as a substitute fielder, if counted.

That time, I even wrote to papers /cricinfo on his behalf against injustice. FYI other than on TV, in my life I have seen Tharanga only once in an odi played in Kingston, WI 2013 (I migrated to Canada long time ago).

Happy to hear the boys are getting an increase and no issues with the distribution across the categories. I do wonder if there should be a performance based bonus, rather crude like say, X amount for every run or every wicket.

@Andrew good you have answered my question for all to see...100% obsessed and biased to UT and could not give a rat's arse about anyone else as expected.

You make it sound like no other player puts in hard work or dedication.

And where has Upul Chandana come into this? Have a look at his Test stats.
So he took a 5 wicket haul overseas against a reasonable batting side...he is not the only one. He bowling became more reliable after the turn of the century by which Dharmasena was more or less finished.
No way was he going to replace Murali. Chandana didn't take a wicket in his last test...0/97 he took. The reality is whilst Murali was playing there was no need for another spinner more often than not. Hence Herath really took off post Murali.
It happens everywhere...Stuart MacGill 10 times better than Chandana was unlucky to play in same era as Warne.

For me Cat B is fine for UT. If he was captain still he should have been Cat A. He is lucky to be playing T20S where he is more inconsistent than Thisara. This will prob be Herath's last contract. Now that he is only playing Tests perhaps lucky to get Cat A but he has won his nation Tests and much more superior player than pretty much the entire rest of the squad at this stage. By the end of their careers some may surpass him. Right now he would be their best Test player even at his age, better than the captains/vice captains elect!

The fact you are going on about old "World Records" highlights the obsession! Move on, get a hobby and a life!

Andrew Silva LOL!! You only seen UT play once but you keep commenting about him. Api modayo kiyala hithuwda pissa? I know you are either related to UT, have vested interest in him because you must be his manager. I know for a fact UT cant speak fluent English, let alone to write. It is an 90 year Man on high dose of viagar. Its never going to get up! Obviously you are very upset because you are not getting the cut as a manager because UT is downgraded by SLC. Andrew uba pissek bang! Gong Haraka!
