Sri Lanka to invest in wrist spinners for limited-overs cricket - Labrooy

Photo
"Unless the wickets offer some assistance, finger spinners are not making a big impact. We actually wanted to see whether we could take Jeevan through to next year's World Cup. He had experience. It's not the name, but we are looking at a leg-spinner. We gave Wanindu Hasaranga a break, but it...

It's because Hathurusinghe's team selections & managing of players. Not because of Labrooy's stupidity.

Correct idea but wrong execution. When they say match wining leg spinners is Jeevan Mendis a match wining leggie? He is a part time leg spinner. Hasaranga too is no where near good as other leg spinners around the world.

AKILA DHANANJAYA is our main spinner that we need to invest going forward.

But who is our next best spinner after him?

Definitely he should be a wrist spinner. who are the best available option? definitely not JEEVAN or WANINDU. they are batting all-rounders I believe. It does not mean that we need to neglect them. They also have a job to do in the team when balancing the team. SANDAKAN & VANDERSAY are the best available options. in International arena SANADAKAN has done well compared to VANDERSAY. But we need to back VANDERSAY specially in shorter format. SANADAKN suits for TEST format.as we do not have wicket taking options specially outside the subcontinent it will be a brave decision to use both JEEVAN & WANINDU specially in no.6, 7, 8 positions & may be a extra advantage using wrist spin bowling allrounders even for the next year WC.hence I believe we need to be given consistent chances to VANDERSAY, WANINDU & JEEVAN in upcoming ODI tournaments before WC 2019. we need variety in our bowling attack competing with top teams.you can't do that with our front line bowlers & need help from part time options as well as we do not have STARC, RABADA, TRENT BOULT type of quality fast bowlers.INIDIA uses that trick quite well.they play both CHAHAL & KULDEEP even outside Subcontinent. they proved that by winning 5-1 & 2-1 in SA.

Neither jeewan nor wanidu are wicket taking options. So I think vandesay is the only viable option at the moment though he is also not in the calibre of chahal Tahir or Rashid.

Fast bowling seems to be the main concern as non of the pacies in current set are capable of challenging the top class batters

Dammika Prasad has started playing again domestic matches and if he is managed properly , can be used for the next year s word cup
