Just sums up what a great batter Sanath was to end up second on this list. It's one thing thrashing a double hundred when its 600 plays 500 in a tame draw. Quite the contrary when you are the only guy making any runs on a tough wicket. I mean the last wicket stand was 101 and "no ball Fernando" made 1! Everyone knows and thinks about Sanaths limited overs exploits and quite rightly so but he was a great test batter too.

I recall a Galle test against a strong SA side, first test, day 1 Sanath got to 96 before lunch - The saffers were stunned. He was that kind of player and really came from no where. His got his first test because of an injury to Mahanama or Hathurusinghe in the Adeliade test. He made a thrashing 100 and rest as they was history.

Not the sort of player who was ever going to average 50+ but it's that ability to take the game by the scruff which made him special.
