In my opinion Ashantha de Mel, Sanath Jayasuriya and even Kapila Wijegoonewardene were much better than Labrooy. Limited success we achieved during Labroys tenure (only in test cricket) is due to Sanath Jaysuriya's great decision to make Chandimal the test skipper before he quit the chief selector post. Otherwise we could have been the number 8 ranked team in all versions of the game, with Mathews leaving the team due to injuries or personal reasons in the middle of important tours, putting the team in to a crisis more often than not.

When Jayasuriya was the chief selector many new talents were given opportunity to play international cricket such as Asela Gunaratne, Dhananjaya de Silva, Lakshan Sandakan etc. Sanath also brought back discarded Ambalangoda batsman Upul Tharanga while Wijegoonawardene selected all important Kusal Mendis if my memory is correct. Unfortunately Labrooys is finding no one like his predecessors rather than destroying all the good work done by them.

I still don't know how he can be both ICC Match Referee and Chairman of Selectors. Can't really put in half efforts to either role and different focuses. Wish he was asked to consider one of the other.

Match Ref role will at times require him to travel and focus on other teams and their cricket instead of just Sri Lankan cricket.
Perhaps if he was just one of the panellist (still not ideal) it would a bit better but as Chairman he should be focused on talent, form and progress of SL side only

@delan82: You are right to wonder how Labrooy is doing 2 jobs at once. This is how it is possible. I believe that Labrooy actually does ONLY ONE JOB, the Match Referee. And the Chief Selector is, only on paper. I think the big wigs of SLC, led by Sumathipala, selected the teams for matches and Labrooy and the other 2 selectors was only a "front". Having a henchman as the chief selector enabled Sumathipala and the gang to include certain players- guess who those players are- in order to manipulate the "BETTING" on matches.
Just a thought!

My God he is a utter mess.

Jayasuriya is the reason we are in this message today. He was a disaster as chief selector.

Thank you Anonymous1 (post#4) that is interesting stuff to ponder and given the background and some of the revelations by AlJezeera expose and stuff actually fits quite perfectly as you have said.

Sad to see the state of Sri Lankan cricket (although the fight back in 2nd Test was impressive...just thought they missed a few tricks to give themselves max time and ways to take those 10 Windies wickets to win that Test)

delan82, Thanks for not just brushing aside what I said. I feel that as far as the present selectors are in, Sumathipala, although is out of the office, can still influence team selections. Take care!
