Replace Mathews as Sri Lanka captain? Nonsense!

As the defeats begin to accumulate, fans, journalists and SLC officials will begin to panic but panic decision-making must be avoided.

Angelo Mathews is Sri Lanka's best option for captain yet the losses in England has seen fans and journalists questioning his leadership abilities. Replacing him will not change Sri Lanka's fortunes. Sometimes, it's prudent to acknowledge that your team can be outplayed by a stronger opposition.

When Danushka Gunathilaka settles in, Sri Lanka will have a formidable opening combination, along with Kusal Perera. And Kusal Mendis, who has already proven his ability, will become more consistent with experience. Sri Lanka's batting woes won't last forever. The losses will be a thing of the past when the inexperienced and the inconsistent gain more exposure, which is why patience is imperative.

No major changes should be made without a thoughtful process behind it. Drastic changes when the team is losing is a sign of chaos caused by needless panic. Long-term goals and strategies must not be forgotten.

The calls to replace Mathews and the criticism over his captaincy are absurd. When Mathews led Sri Lanka to a 2014 Test series win in England, there was no scrutiny over his captaincy.

Sri Lanka are fairing poorly today because of the void created by the retirements of two senior batsmen — Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene — and it will take time to fill those shoes. Injuries to bowlers have hampered them, but the failure to score big totals is perhaps the primary reason for their dip. Neither a new captain nor the dropping of your most disliked player will make any difference.

Sanga and Mahela is no longer an excuse not to perform. This isn't the first tour that we suffered due to wrong and negative decision making. It started with long time a go. Pakistan was able to win their last match from nowhere due to negative approach. Then again in New Zealand. Now in here in England. Good captain would make 256 competitive total by his tactics and attacking field placing. Sure we lacked the penetration with depleted bowling attack but should not have like this. Also he plays a huge role in selecting players. It was wrong to drop Milinda. Selecting Prasanna over proper wicket taking option. Shankas' omission from the last match. He failed only once and he got kicked out. Randive is an orthodox bowler. Without variation no way he can get wickets. From few months our team may look like this.. Dilshan, Kusal, Thirmanna, Chandimal, Mathews, Thissara, Kulasekara, Lakmal, Prasanna, Senanayake, Maharoof. Selectors and captain wants proven failures in the team rather than new upcoming talents.

Amila the examples you provide are insignificant compared to the times he has won matches for us single handedly. There is another idiot on Cricinfo who also keeps bringing up a handful of examples but ignore the many times his captaincy and brilliance has won us matches! Keep track of the victories too.

His captaincy in 2014 made SL to wait until 90th over for victory. Everyone is talking about only series win he had 2 years back. Do I need to point out what we lost under his captaincy?

Should not use Matthew captaincy in 2014 as justification for ignoring his failures this year. In 2014 although Matthews may have been the "captain", everybody knows that it was Sanga and Mahela who made most decisions on the field. Without this guidance Matthews is struggling big time. It can be argued that the seniors had alot more experience and that Matthews is still learning but then it is his mindset that is the issue not his experience. More attacking captains such as Chandimal should be considered.

Mahela had a huge influence when mathews was a captain... so his faults were hidden... I can feel mahela fuming in the com box irritated with mathews.... Problem is in mindset, not performance... we all believe we have a formidable limited overs line up but it will be of no use if we allow teams to chase down any target..... He is never looking for wickets, always for mistakes... I dont know any other captain who allows teams to beat us after getting on top of them.... We dont want to lose mathews the player, but we dont need mathews the captain....

Mathews is good Intelligent player, but he need to improve some more. One thing is, According to our England tour squad we have only batting power ability. Then why we start with batting first. We need to ball first initially, then we know the target and easily can follow up.
And we need to ball sholder high bouncers near to body,In that easily we can dismiss batsman. Spinners need to ball slow and tide lines wicket to wicket.
My Squad for 3rd ODI
1. kusal
2. Tharanga
3. Dhanushka
4. Mendis
5. Chandimal
6. Mathews
7. Dhananjaya
8. shanaka
9. Prasanna
10. Maharoof
11. Lakmal

This must be the right batting lineup. If we get start better we can change the batting lineup by sending shanaka. After that Prasanna.

Never give chances to Thirimanne.

Surely this is nonsense,i mean the article.Only justification the editor has is a series win 2 years ago.In that too we couldn't take 5 wickets untill the penultimate ball.
Critics on his captaincy didn't started on this tour. From that sarjah test his captaincy has lost many matches for us.Everyday he proves how poor is he just like in the last match.

poor selections, poor man managment , negative attitude poor tactics,

I do agree Angelo's captaincy should be brought on focus. His negative mindset is one of the reason. But having said its not the only reason we are in our current predicament. Selecting wrong players have added weight to this situation. As Amilasaman pointed out. I believe Prasanna, Randiv, Lakmal, Tharanga shouldn't be in the squad. I don't know their selections was made due to Angelo's input? If it is , then this trend will continue.

We need to overhaul the current backroom staff. We need someone better than Champaka, fielding and batting coach. When other countries including Bangladesh have extended back room staff, what we do? We move them on to insignificant newly created roles.

We need all our wise heads for a brainstorming session. Discuss why are we at this position and what we need to do get where we want!!!'s picture
