Do you think Tharanga should be instantly AXED (like recent t20 V SA) whenever he hits a brief lean patch?

Anyone remember Greame Hick? He scored an absolute ton of runs at the county level but at international level, he was lost. For some reason he simply couldn't step up to the next level.

In Tharanga's case he actually had a very successful stint at international level in the past but hasn't been able to have the same impact since. Most importantly, as a senior player, hardly impacts the game, hence the search for other options. Given the lack of finding new talent, he is still in the frame and can still play a role but as we saw in the SA series, he just didn't. Fair enough everyone is allowed to have a few bad series, but at his level, days are running out.

FYI Tharanga has been one of the MOST PRODUCTIVE SL Batters in Global Stage completions to date. Unfortunately he was AXED to slotted in useless henchman Dimuth Karunarathne in Upul's place in 2015 WC.

THaranga was certainly the missing link in that 2015 WC to seal the chance of getting in to the 3rd consecutive WC FINAL & probably win it with the combination of Sanga & Dilly's Career Best effort Stints gone wasted in that WC hopes ending at QF stage..... as Murali Openly said to the Media.!

Tharanga's 's Global Stage ODI Competitions Record:

27 innings – 2 NO - 1,017 runs @ 41 Av - 76 SR - 4 x100+ & 5 x 50+ (playing in 21 WC innings + 6 ICC-Champions Trophy innings).

What about his crucial 73 runs made V Nz at Kingston, WI to WIN the Semi-Final, to enter ICC World Cup Final in 2007 ?

Unfortunately he was left out from 2015 WC as well, despite being ranked as the 5th best batter in 2011 WC with 2 x 200+ stands for the 1st wicket including an unbeaten ton Vs Eng in Quater-FINALS!

UT @ WC 2011: 9 in -395 runs @ 56 Av - 84 SR - 2 x 100 - 1 x 50

Read SL Cricket History before making foolish comments just because you are not aware of it.!

I will certainly keep an eye out for his performance in the final stages of a tournament when we really need him.

Mind you I was like julius at one stage, always wondered why Upul get dropped. But after so many years watching him, supporting him, he was never there when its the deciding game of the tournament.

But later on he gets 2 100’s back to back. So frustrated...

Stormy I thought Tharanga produced his career best productivity last year becoming one of the only 3 odi batters topped 1000 runs in the world in 2017.

Scoring 1000+ runs from 25 innings @ 48 average and 93 sr is extremely outstanding to any fair mind.

This is even more creditable when consider the pathetic state of all other SL batters who repeatedly doomed SL, wasting Upul's single handed efforts to win matches and avoid whitewashes (ie: his unbeaten 100+ vs Pk carrying the bat through out the inning creating a SL record but ran out of partners to make the few runs needed to win that match. All other top order batters couldn't collect even 100 runs from 5 innings. In SA also his blazing ton wasted by the rest to doom that match. In India he made another blazing 90+ that was wasted by the rest unable to make any impact.

So only a blind fool would blame tharanga for the incompetent incapabilities of much hyped jokers never get the blame for their sins. Check your head before find fault with truth.

The intolerable part of Tharanga's success is the Tharanga Fan, when ever Tharanga hit a 100, 50 or even 30+ score this lunatic fan (he should be Tharanga's BF) is all over the internet activating his all fake accounts, he has a vast amount of fake profiles I do not know how he maintain all of that, I have noticed one incident where he post a article using account called "Andrew" and he himself commenting to the same article using his
another account called "Piwithuru Sannasgala", then mistakenly on another page he post the same article using "Piwithuru Sannasgala" and comment using the "Andrew" account. It is funny but I really think he should go and see a doctor. He gets very personal and very angry with rest of the cricket fans, he always want to lose SL team when Tharanga is not playing, then he start to claim that SL is losing because Tharanga is axed from the team and comes up with all his useless stats, I am sure nobody reads that. I am not a Tharanga fan but when I start to like the guy then comes his fan with all his annoying comments discarding other players and fans...

Poor guy, I think he lives in Canada.

Cricexp -

Yet to see a comment related to the topic from you in any of my blogs or polls. Repeating the same old "pedigree" slogan (fabricated in your fantasy dreams) like a silly parrot seems all that you could do...when unable to counter any of my legitimate points & become frustrated!

Oh Girl! try to come up with some relevant substance or argument related to the topic like a Man rather than a chintz wrapping village woman..! LoL

It is not clear what you guys are trying to say or prove here? If not blind, the points stressed by the rest are quite clear to anyone with a brain. But, Your views, speculations and allegations are based on nothing -no real substance/basis- as far as anyone could see in this thread. All you try to do here is putting a complete blind eye to the solid facts & trying to contradict those facts with just "words" with no proof or value in those words to backup your effort.

FYI, STATS are undeniable FACTS acceptable anywhere in this world. It is the universal measurement of progress in any field. Even most vitally logistic decisions made in governing developed nations are based on them.

STATS maybe useless to an idiotic looser like Cricexp. But, that doesn't mean stats have no value to prove a point or interest to other readers. Only downside of stats is for the people who try to deceive others by their imaginary fabrications, to establish false opinions/impressions as clearly seen in this thread!

Obviously you hate to admit/recognize Tharanga's achievements or assertiveness to SL in limited over cricket. That is your problem. But, IF you have a real point, why don't you come up with it with some solid facts, stats or any hard evidence provable anywhere?

Former captain Sanath Jayasuriya recently named Gunathilaka as one of the players who could break his Sri Lankan record for most ODI centuries – 28.

Sanath is the one who stalled Upul Tharanga's ODI career at 28 yrs of age in mid 2013 for more than 3 years virtually without any ODI exposure. This AXING happened just 3 weeks after, Upul scored his career best ODI score of unbeaten 174* Vs India (his 13th TON)& topped 5,000 runs as 2nd quickest SL in 2013 July.

Sanath picked clueless Dimuth (15.8 av in odi) to open in NZ/WC in 2015 prior to WC, overlooking UT. Dimuth ended up wasting 7 odi innings to collect 106 runs at 15 av – 65 SR thanks to SJ’s parochial selections. UT was overlooked for NZ tour-Test/Odi/WC series squads in 2014 Dec to 2015 April, despite being the highest batting contributor in previous Test series decider with 92 & 45 V PK in the end of 2014. That was SL’s last Test series win against a formidable side up to 2016 & overlooking of highest batting contributor for the next series squad (unrelated to injury), was the first such despicable omission happened in world cricket.

Two previous occasions that SJ omitted UT from the squads selected to Eng comes to my mind. In June 2013 - ICC-CT, he selected Kusal Perera over UT. In that flopped Global tournament Kusal managed 14 runs at 3.50 Av – 61 SR, dumping 4 Odis. But, strangely in the following year 2014 June, UT was overlooked again & Kusal was selected to ODI series in Eng, despite his pitiful record in Eng & the 4 ball duck in Ireland just before the selections. Thanks to SJ, within 2 yrs KJP had played 2 Odis more in Eng than Upul’s 5 Odis in 10 yrs. Just looking at Kusal’ s overall record in Eng: 7 in- 52 runs - 7 av… with Upul’s 5 in – 347 runs- 70 av tells the long story in short at that time : )

Sanath may have prevented Tharanga from reaching his 28 tons record by wiping-off 3+ yrs of Upul's prime Odi career!
