What should SLC's sentence be for Chandimal, Gurusinha and Hathurusingha?

I have a feeling that even saliva and sweat were technically not allowed in some of the earlier versions/interpretations of this law? Is that correct? Someone please correct me if i'm wrong. Were rules relaxed as more players started to do it?

Also did Atherton get off relatively lightly because of technicality of the dirt being artificial vs natural and him claiming to dry the ball?

Good point about hygiene. You see some players take and put ball under armpits like Fanie de Villers and others like Merv Hughes directly lick the ball...poor teammates. (I think Merv would stick his tongue in people's ears too if they took catches off his bowling hahaha)

Yep can't stop a substitute although cameras may watch him these days.

Interesting to see what revised laws will be when they come out soon, and also Dave Richardson's Cowdrey Lecture this year is supposed to touch on tampering amongst other things

Delan-You need to see the whole statement of Chandi. What he has said was "he had multiple items inside his pocket like strepsills, almond, etc and he was not sure what he was having at that particular vedio frame" that is a fair logic right? If you had 5 difference toffees yesterday and if I ask you which color toffee did u eat at 3.45pm, can u exactly recall it? It surely must have been a fabricated story but that surely is a valid logic right?

Interesting points but just wish to point out this is not about if and what Chandi put in his mouth as that is already a settled matter. Sure we may not like it but he has been already fined and banned for one test.

The remaining issue is the impact from the delaying the game for 2 hours and what if any sentence should be handed out to the three by SLC. Remember last time a game was delayed, by Pakistan for 20 minutes, the test was forfeited so this is not like a minor matter.

The good thing is there is some chaos at SLC and the remaining thieves are probably planing the next loot so we may get off with this. The main issue is what will the ICC do.

In some countries, false allegations are always challenged in higher court and punitive damages are collected. Probably, ICC would go bankrupt while ICC umpires do time behind bars. Leaders of countries, doctors, pharmaceutical companies, etc have been taken to higher court for their malpractices, racketeering etc. ICC should use the referees of world soccer as model. They referee the toughest players and but they do not act like mommy that discipline toddlers. Instead, they treat these soccer players as mature adults, and not as thieves. But ICC umpires treat int’l players as high school kids or the way some elementary school teachers treat kids…‘Don’t question us, don’t stare at me, don’t show discord with my decisions, etc’. I certainly agree that rowdiness, overly aggressiveness & rudeness, etc that crosses line of spirit of sport should not be allowed. IMO, 1) umpire should take part in inspecting the new ball frequently. 2) Use of saliva should be banned. On sanitary point of view, saliva could transmit diseases such as herpes etc. Instead, allow to use a polishing cloth that only umpire provides. It is upto bowling side how to shine the new ball. 3) Never touch the match fee of a player even after a conviction. Since it is a salary earned as a profession / career meanwhile serving the country like brave soldiers, dedicated teachers, etc. 4) Judiciary hearing is not ICC layman job. It is a lawyer’s job who assumes that defendant is innocent until solid, scientific, rational evidence brought to convict. Right now ICC follows the judiciary system of terrorists who assumes defendant is totally guilty until solid proof shown to over turn. Please fix the broken ICC system that mug innocent players. It stinks.

The law literary says no artificial substance should go on shiny half of the ball (other than saliva/ sweat), immediately before shinning it. No matter what the unknown substance Chandimal put in his mouth seconds before applying the extract of that chewed substance mixed with saliva, on the ball. The rapid sequence of this process happened was dead-caught on cameras & no excuses! It could be anything; a sweet, gum or even almond or any other nut usually full of natural oils giving ample shine. Under the law no matter what it was, he had violated it beyond dispute.

Someone stupidly argued here, assuming the substance as a sweet & comparing it with drinks taken at breaks. What the Foreign Substance is completely irrelevant to ball tampering law, only the rapidity (in sequence of events) matters in violation of that law to become guilty.

Even though it doesn't matter to stipulated law, for argument sake, the following scenario has no provable basis to accuse. Ie: After drinks break, a fresh over starts, at least a few minutes later. Even if someone managed to do the impossible of keeping the drink in his mouth for that long without getting noticed or opening his mouth without swollowing it, shining cannot be enhanced with traces of any sugar (glucose, dextrose, fructose, sucrose etc, etc) containing soft drink, taken a few minutes before. Any sugar will have only a tarnishing negative effect on shine. Remember, players are free to nibble anything, as long as they don't do it just before shinning a ball, as guilty Chandimal did (because the obtainable advantage from such extract, get diluted in saliva & fades away with time) - simple logic!

HumbleBee (AKA Andrew Silva/Upul Tharanga/EveryBodyHatesMe/IamALoser/MDKJUlius/IDontHaveWork/PiwithuruSannasgala/Upul De Bradmon/Ranjith Perera/etc etc) -
Nobody give a thing about what you say, everybody knows your intention. You want SL team to lose every match we are playing without Upul Tharanga, you want to dump every Sri Lankan batsmen who play ahead of Upul Tharanga, specially you hate all the Sri Lankan opening batsman, then you hate all the senior batsmen, you want to dump Anji so you think leaving Anji will create a void in the team and then Upul will recall to the team to fill that gap, that didn't work, now you want to chase Chandi and see, likewise you try to attack every possible Sri Lankan player thinking that "Upul ද Bradmon" will get a chance to play, you have been doing this for years now and everybody knows your fake account names and all the false stats you try to bring in. You do not care whether Sri Lanka win or lose all you want is your lazy Tharanga play for the team.

You may have a psychological(mental/පිස්සු) issue and it's true we should support you as a community but its getting too annoying now and going out of control.

cricexp I read the whole statement..why does he not know which one? Or go one step back why is there so many things in his pocket included items that are prohibited which as captain he should surely have known...i wouldn't have 5 different toffees in my pocket to start with especially ones that are not permitted to use on a ball to get into that scenario in the first instance. No excuse!

Oh and the colour doesn't matter it's the type!

Just to add to previous comments...it might sound harsh and cruel but this is not a junior or club cricketer this is a national captain. Ball tampering has been all over the news authorities saying they would clamp down why would you get yourself into this situation?
I understand Chandimal was ill in 1st Test and maybe some lozenges taken for that reason but they don't know what is permitted wouldn't the process be to ask someone?

And weren't you going on about hygiene earlier? Does he have all these loose items in his pocket wicket packaging (wrappers).

As for the video you referred to why put something in the mouth with ball in hand the proceed to shine the ball? Why not shine it first then put "item" into mouth or pass ball onto someone else and do it!

Combined it's all a nice look isn't it? No conspiracy a lot of this is self inflicted and could have been avoided...and the protest afterwards not only inflamed it all but cost Sri Lanka the chance to win the series

Delan- Chandimal may have done something wrong but as Arnold mentioned it looks like a genuine mistake, yes mistake is a mistake but he does not deserve the maximum punishment where non of other players who had clear proofs never had a match ban in the history, and no any team has had 5 runs penalty, for ex; Faf Duplessis case it was clearly visible he was having some sort of sweet inside his mouth and he used the saliva to shine the ball but he never received the match ban nor 5 runs penalty. That is why actually Chandimal's video did not go viral because anybody who could see the video can understand it was a genuine mistake, otherwise Chandimal should be a utter idiot to do that in public exposing the whole incident to every cam corner. If you want to cheat you make sure the process is hidden like every other incident.

Regarding the team play delay, We could have handled the issue a bit better but our management also has a valid point especially umpires informed the team management just 10 mins before the match start, they had no issues with the ball at the end of day 2, so obviously management should enquire and ask for proofs when someone pointing fingers at your players, so they never had proofs until the evening and even javagal Srinath had mentioned that our team was not accused to tamper the ball there could be other reasons so 5 runs penalty will not be applied. Then only our players resume the play then once the play resume umpires added the 5 penalty runs to the score, at this time Chandimal has questioned umpires because they breached the agreement they just had with match refree just before the play resume.

I still believe we should not dance to the tune of ICC, if they have proofs and if they had provided it to SL management then yes we should have carried on with the game but this was just totally unprofessional from referee and umpires.

How can what Chandimal did be a mistake? What kind of nonsense is this???
