Don't drop Vithanage. Instead, help him to develop as a better leg-spinner. We need him as an attacking batsman in case we need quick runs to set up or chase down a target.
Drop Thirimanna, try Kusal Perera as an opener. Let Karunaratna bat down the order.

KITHRUWAN is a good batsmen. Don't need to drop him. We have given number of chances to Thrimanne, Dimuth, Chandimal. We have not given so many chances to Kithruwan. He has the highest first class score in an inning (351). Means when he gets going he scores big runs. We need to give establish position to batters in the team. With the experience they will perform well. We can't expect these bowlers from more than that. You need at least one wicket taking option in your bowling lineup. Eg- Yasir Saha can spin the ball, Wahab Riaz can bowl very quick. We need PHT Koushal & Dushmantha Chameera into the team. One can turn the ball & one can bowl fast.

Agree with number 2 comment here. Kithruwan is a match winner. Match winners are the layers who can play some extra ordinary performances to win matches. Tharanga is not a match winner, I don't think even that Thrir and Chandi are macth winners. But this guy has the potential. He needs to be nurtured, he can be very tough mentally and physically very strong too. When he gets going he is quite unstoppable. He could be a Sri lankan Yuvaraj Singh. This guy deserves a place, but i think he got it at the wrong time. Kusal was doing a lot better than him but we opted to play him. I think Kusal desrves a place in the next match. And both kusal and Kithruwan should play the 3rd test after sanga goes back to surrey.

I dont think we are in a position to start dropping guys after ONE test and starting the merry-go-around with the batting order. I reckon stick with this order for the series as a minimum. You cant expect guys to come out of SL frist class structure and adpat to test cricket. They need some time to gain some confidence. I am not suggesting spots are permanent but give a guy a fair go before considering changes.

I don't think we need to change the batting lineup. Although Kusal or Jehan included into the team instead of Kithruwan i don't think they will score big runs. As anjelo said we need to be patience with these guys. We need to give them more chances in international level. Kithruwan & Kusal are 2 match winners we have. Both of them should be included into the test team. It will be helped them to learn how to build a long inning & how to use mind when bat. It is helpful for their odi career as well.

My test team for future;

1.Koushal Silva
2.Dimuth Karunarathna
3.Lahiru Thirimanne
4.Anjelo Mathews
5.Kithruwan Vithanage
6.Dinesh Chandimal
7.KusalJanith Perera
8.PHT Koushal
9.Malinda Pushpakumara/Lakshan Sandakan/Jeffrey Vandersay
10.Dushmantha Chameera
11.Binura Fernando

It is a quite rite when you say Chandimal is not a match winner, he hasn't played huge number of cricket but he has won us few important matches during his early days, one example is first test win against SA in SA, also the last Aussi tour he is one of the top run getter in Aussi condition, even now he owns the best ODI average in Aussi pitches (50+ average vs Aussi in Aussi). As a test wicket keeper he still holds the 3rd best average of the cricket history with the average of 52+ as a wicket keeper batsmen. His overall test average is 42 + which is also the current 2nd best average in SL team after Sanga.

I don't think they want to make wholesale changes after 1 loss.
It would have been nice to see KJP in side because at this very moment he was in extremely good form with the bat. And that was the main surprise for me from previous XI. Reward and play them when they are in form not out of it!
Perhaps a shuffling of batting line up would help. Not sure everyone was batting in the ideal position for the team last Test.

I think the bowling is a bigger concern than the batting.
Certain bowlers didn't look fit and certain bowlers are not very penetrative when conditions don't favour them.
There's nothing you can do about injury except not select people that are 100%. Not sure what the latest is with fitness of Lakmal or Eranga as far as faster bowlers go.
I wouldn't mind seeing on of the young spinners given ago. Pakistan's spinners out bowled ours. Not sure which spinner to replace. Dilruwan wasn't that special, but Herath had a shocker and in not fit.

Angelo needs to take a hard look at his captaincy also and the inability to finish teams off. It's not a one off thing, and has happened a number of times of late.
