Gunarathna is a complete batter with that all around technical ability and can execute controlled strokes all around the park with ease, came into the Side purely on merits in contrast, Thirimanna is batter of limited strokes that starts edging & missing from the bowl No 1, such style of batting [ over crouched as well ] can never demoralize a bowling attack. In the last 2 decades many an ordinary type of players were allowed to represent the Country by the administrators [ with very little Cricketing background] & selectors [ not fit for the job ] because players' rich parents or some other powerful personality wanted those average players to be included in the National Side, thus overlooking many a Highly talented Schoolboy Cricketers produced by our schools, such as : e.g. IanDaniel, RanilDhmmika, Muthumudalige Pushpakumara of YWC2000; Bhanuka Rajapaksha, Romesh Bhuddhika, ChathuraPeris, Charith Jayampathi of YWC 2010. Most of these players have lost interest of the Game due to lack proper Domestic Cricket system [of last 15 years in particular] in the Country as we find it in other places where Test Cricket is well established. These acts of fielding average players, can be described as heinous crimes in relation to the Country's reputation & prestige.
