Sri Lanka Cricket Quotes

"First of all, we have to change the constitution of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). There is no question about that. I think, even Sports Minister Faiszer Musthapha agrees with that point but, how he is going about it is a mystery. We have to bring down the SLC voting system to about 20 or 30. Now there are over 140 votes at the SLC AGM, just like Parliamentary elections. Thereafter, to sustain their position, they keep promising the moon and the earth. You get voted in and then it’s a matter of doling out money to keep the clubs happy, and they are not worried about the standard of cricket. For instance, even in India, a country far bigger than ours, there are only about 40 votes."

"The constitution really needs to be addressed. It should be made open to persons with some sport or commercial and corporate background — a person who will come in and do the policy planning and the financial administration. Practical areas could be handled by former players who have engaged in the game, which is also very important. We are talking about a Rs 1 billion industry. Then you can’t let a person who has played just a little club cricket, coming in and doing the administration. You need checks and balances. You need corporate governance, you need CAPEX expenditure, and all these are serious issues. Cricket is only a sport, but the management of it is a billion rupee industry."

"I firmly believe that we need to amend the Sports Law and the Constitution of Sri Lanka Cricket and Interim Committees aren’t the answer for the problems facing cricket. We need to introduce a system where apart from elected office bearers we also have appointed ones. There should be a Trustee above the Executive Committee to oversee things. The Trustee should have the final say when the Executive Committee wants to incur expenses above a certain limit."

"When you get consistency within a team, you will see improvements in performance. When we’re getting new players every game, it gets very difficult from a confidence point of view. From the player’s point of view, it’s very difficult. It’s difficult for us the coaching staff to create a strategy."

"We were sent to Pakistan in 2009 and we returned with bullets in our bodies. I still have some iron from those bullets in my body. We asked questions about security from SLC prior to that tour and did not get any answers. It's high time to investigate about it. Did SLC do a proper security assessment before sending us? It was as if we were sent to die. Why was that tour organized, was it because of a need of an individual? Who is responsible for what happened?"
