Is SR of 112 a big deal for a Opener, considering when there is 2 fielders outside 30? Common get a life bro....

@SN : Sure it matters unlike in uppish blind slogging. Tharanga has an impeccable skills in timing the ball and picking the gaps to penetrate through the ring of fielders placed around to stop the boundaries. His elegant drives and powerful cuts played precisely intercepting the fielders bring lots of boundaries to SL This was repeatedly praised by commentators worldwide. Maintaining excellent SR with good cricket shots, without donating the wicket inside10 balls as seen in T20 type slogging openers, is a special skill. Those T20 type openers miserably fail in 20 innings to produce one or 2 match defining innings, wasting 50 odis. Kusal perera is the best example. Openers role just not confined to Runs, but to negotiate and see off the seaming new ball spells without loosing the wicket. prematurely exposing the lower batsmen was the biggest problem we had since tharanga was axed.

And look how he starts the innings. It's a boundary of course but hardly any foot movement. For how long have we seen this, in a non seaming and swinging conditions, he gets through it, but if it does, then he does not have what it takes to counter it. He is been playing the game for so long, but never corrected this. I wish people will quit crying about Tharanga and get a move on.

@ Avizzzy :surely it was a flat track.. where you need perfect timing and placement to intercept the field. In addition... if you want to see his perfect foot work on lively /bouncy decks or on a two-phased track with uneven bounce in the formal Test format, watch the following innings played in Australia, Eng and SL.

Generalizing to demean a player's valuable inning is a sure sign of "sour-grapes" mentality.

@ Anonymous: I can remember his impeccable skills in timing the ball and picking the gaps in important Worldcup Final 2011 , just scoring 2 runs for 20 balls... Sure no wonder we lost...

@SN post #5 : didn't i already given u the answer for this in another thread?

obviously you don't understand the basics in cricket. dealing with moving new ball in initial spells and batting in lower down facing an old ball is 2 different things that cannot be compared in anyway. as i explained in previous posting, prevailed conditions were used by seamer Zaheer to the max, backed with extra ordinary fielding.

As i said before, superb fielding of Yuvraj at point & Raina at cover-point dived and cutoff at least 3 certain boundaries came from Tharanga's front foot drives picking the gaps, off Zaheer during that 20 balls.!!! Extra ordinary fielding efforts could stop anything.. so only a fool with malicious intent would single out one failure, ignoring all his overall contributions leading to that final... to criticize Just review the match if you have it or check the cricinfo archives and read the ball by ball commentary. Are you are expecting a batsman to succeed in every inning ? How did you forget that Tharanga made 31 ball 30 Vs Nz in Sem-final and a record breaking unbeaten 102* to win the qurter-final by 10 wickets? He scored 395 runs at an 56.42 av - 83.68 SR- 2x100 - 1x50 for SL in 2011 WC.

For an example, In the Semifinal even NZ's slogging opener BB McCullum had faced 21 balls to score 13 runs.. why? he found the conditions were tough in those initial overs, but if he had survived a few more overs he would have scored much more runs with 100+ SR .. this is how the business goes. Only a fool with no clue about cricket conditions would accuse an opener as selfish, who tried to negotiate the new ball threat, while making 3 potential boundary efforts (which were saved by superb fielding) inside that 20 balls.!
