Absolutely fantastic innings. He had the entire game in his control. The only man to take on Tahir. If this innings does not justify his place in the team then i dont know what does. Because of this, de Silva can be dropped for Mathews when he returns. Hopefully for the Champions trophy we can have a team like this. If only Malinga played this match, SL would of have definitely won it. I think its best for Chandimal to take a break from ODI and T20 and see how well Weerakkody will do.
For ODIs
Pathirana/Shanaka (depending on pitch)
Lasith Malinga

For T20
Kusal Perera
Niroshan Dickwella
Upul Tharanga
Angelo Mathews
Dasun Shanaka
Seekuge Prassana
Thisara Perera
Lakshan Sandakan
Nuwan Pradeep
Lahiru Kumara
Lasith Malinga

After a long time feeling happy that we gave them a fight. If you look at the batting line-ups Sri Lanka only Tharanga and Kulasekara with some experience. Hope Sri Lanka stick with this opening pair even if they fail time to time. Weerakkodys' innings was not the most fluent I have seen but he did his job of course with some luck. A good thing of his innings is he scored runner ball and remember he is an opener. With the inclusion of Mathews, probably Shanka, Siriwardhan, Prasad, Pradeep Malinga and improved chameera we still can fight.

Today Tharanga/Dickwella combo (in last 2odis & T20 final as well) defined the difference between stop-gap makeshift "openers" and GENUINE OPENERS! Also, the importance of having right guys at right spots.

Skipper Tharanga's magic show with youngsters Dickka & Mendis in SA:
-> Sri Lanka: 50 runs in 4.5 overs (29 balls),
-> 1st Wicket: 50 runs in 29 balls (N Dickwella 17, WU Tharanga 31, Ex 2)
-> WU Tharanga: 50 off 25 balls (5 x 4, 4 x 6)
-> Sri Lanka: 100 runs in 9.4 overs (58 balls), Extras 6
-> 1st Wicket: 100 runs in 58 balls (N Dickwella 29, WU Tharanga 65, Ex 6)
-> N Dickwella: 50 off 40 balls (8 x 4)
-> Sri Lanka: 150 runs in 19.3 overs (117 balls),
-> WU Tharanga: 100 off 73 balls (9 x 4, 7 x 6)
-> 2nd Wicket: 50 runs in 46 balls (WU Tharanga 27, BKG Mendis 23, Ex 1)
-> Sri Lanka: 200 runs in 25.5 ovs (155 b),

Although SL lost we are proud of you guys. BTW, where are those humbug critics who always unfairly demeaned UT's abilities in every forum, with unreal comments, like wild bees?

Tharanga is the most valuable opener in SL resources. It is a shame that he was not given his deserved place for more than 3 years by axing him in mid 2013 despite scoring career best unbeaten 174* just 3 weeks before chopping him from odis.

None can justify dumping such a player at 28 years without allowing decent chance for 4 yrs.

This should the final nail in the coffin for Sanath Jayasuriya as a selector.

After Tharanga hammered 174 not out in 2013 in West Indies while opening batting Jayasuriya became chairman of selectors a few months later and ever since then Tharanga has been 0ut of the side.

Jayasuriya went on TV and told the gullible fans that Tharanga has a weakness outside off stump and the people who have weak minds believed Jayasuriya's stupid logic. How can an opening batsmen who has 13 ODI hundred all over the world have such a big issue with technique all of a sudden after Jayasuriya becomes chairman of selectors?? Dumb move!!

Tharanga went one whole year playing only 3 or 4 ODIs and Sanath kept changing and chopping openers and bringing in young guys from U19 side and axing them after one game.
